Marrubium rotundifolium Silver Edged Horehound is one our very best xeric groundcovers for poor soil areas with hot, sunny growing conditions. The soft felted leaves are green with a bright silver underside that curls up to give the leaves a silver edge. Drought resistant/drought tolerant plant (xeric).
Description
2009 Plant Select Winner 10″ tall x 18″ wide (cutting propagated). Native to high, dry areas of Turkey, this is sure to become a very popular addition to the Western xeric garden. The soft felted leaves are green on top and edged in white with the backs of the leaves also woolly white. The flowers are insignificant and should be sheared off to expose the evergreen, ornamental foliage. A vigorous grower, this plant does well in lean, well-drained soils, requiring little water once established. NOT RECOMMENDED for planting in regions with HOT, HUMID summer weather; the woolly foliage will “melt” from the humidity. A fine ground cover for under planting Caryopteris ‘First Choice’ (where it will accentuate the gray-green foliage) and blue or gray leafed grasses and perennials, to add contrasting texture and color.
